Soot Stamping

We just had our first major snow storm of the year. WHAT? Snow in October? Yep! But I've just had so much fun this morning experimenting with SOOT STAMPING for the first time that I didn't even care about the snow outside. Have you tried the soot stamping technique? It creates a vintage photograph effect. For each of my cards I used the train from the Stampin' Up! set called Happiness is a Journey.

The technique is simple:
1.) Light a candle
2.) Using glossy cardstock glossy side down move your cardstock over the candle flame being sure that the flame touchs the cardstock. (WARNING: the edges of the cardstock will catch fire so do this near the sink in case of emergency.)
3.) The flame will leave black soot on your glossy cardstock. As soon as you've achieved the coverage you want, blow out the candle and then take your stamp and stamp directly (do NOT use any ink)onto the soot.
4.) Spray a clear fixative or acrylic spray over the soot to set the image. Do NOT touch the soot with your finger prior to spraying the fixative because you'll leave fingerprints. After you spray you can touch the area.

VOILA! That is all there is to it. Here are the three cards I made. I just love them and now I have three masculine cards to use for various occasions:

Well, I suppose I really should shovel off the deck and ramp now for the dogs. They haven't seemed to mind but it is pretty messy.

Until next time,

  5. We also had our first snowfall last weekend, barely enough to cover the grass... the last couple day's it's been back in the 70's. I'm looking forward to the day we get dumped with snow, I just love it!

Your soot stamped cards are gorgeous! I haven't soot stamped in years. Perfect image for this technique, I LOVE the vintage brads.

  9. Yep I wasn't so thrilled to wake up to the snow but I didn't have to go anywhere today, so that helped. They're calling for 12c on Friday...that's so messed up.

  10. This is a truly amazing set of cards and no ink in site. Love the idea of this technique, but fire and I don't get along. I think I'll admire from afar. Love that cutie little wooly lamb on the post below. You are staying busy in your early cold weather.

  12. Wow this is wonderful work!! Love the trains! I am so impress because the directions I used left off the fixative part so I ended with ruined finished products. I know how fast a great project can end. Congratulations on a great success!

  13. Oh boy! This looks so cool!! I may need to try and burn the house down one of these nights. And the best part is that I have all of the necessary ingredients, except some extra time. Thanks, Jennifer!

  16. This is amazing! I don't think I'll try it though....my daughter's house just caught fire last week and that makes me a bit nervous. They look very cool, though!
